Impact of Waste on the World
- Dumpsites receive roughly 40% of the world’s waste and they serve about 3-4 billion people. As an example, the 50 biggest dumpsites in the world affect the daily lives of 64 million people, a population the size of France. As urbanization and population growth continues, it is expected that at least several hundreds of millions more people will be served by dumpsites, mainly in the developing world. If the situation follows the business as usual scenario then dumpsites will account for 8-10 % of the global anthropologic GHG emissions by 2025.
